Microsoft Teams Interpreter alternative
When Teams Copilot Interpreter fits — and when a desktop app does.
Microsoft Teams Interpreter is built into Teams meetings and eligible calls. Parley is a personal desktop translator you can use across Teams, Zoom, Meet and other mainstream meeting software. Here is a fact-checked comparison of licences, monthly hours, languages and fit.
In short: Microsoft Teams Interpreter agent is in-meeting and Teams-to-Teams VoIP speech-to-speech translation: participants can listen in a preferred language, and can let others hear them translated; optional Simulate my voice or preset voices (Ava / Andrew / Fable Turbo). Public conditions (checked 2026-10-15): a qualifying Microsoft 365 base licence + Teams licence + Microsoft Copilot licence (meeting-room devices may use Teams Rooms Pro instead of Copilot where documented); about 20 hours of interpretation per user per month, with usage beyond that subject to available capacity; Support languages include English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Simplified Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, German, French, Korean, and Taiwanese (Learn’s admin page lists nine languages including Chinese/Mandarin but does not list Taiwanese on the same check date — see footnote); meetings up to about 1,000 participants; not for ad-hoc meetings, town halls, webinars, Teams Free, 1:1 PSTN, and several Rooms/events cases per the help pages; anonymous/guest cannot use Interpreter; cross-organisation needs a verified Microsoft 365 account with Copilot; recordings generally keep original audio only. Parley is a personal desktop simultaneous interpreter: translated audio reaches others through meeting mic settings, and the other party need not install Parley or hold Copilot; prepaid wallet billing is Qwen $0.070/minute and Doubao $0.148/minute, with a $1 first top-up trial; usable across Zoom / Meet / Teams. If your organisation already has Copilot, you mainly meet in Teams, and the official language list covers you, native Teams is often simpler. If you need per-minute self-serve, cross-platform meetings, or zero install / zero enterprise licence for the counterpart, Parley fits better. (Disclosure: we make Parley.)

| Self-serve speed | Needs org licensing and admin / meeting-policy settings where applicable | Download, sign in, top up wallet and start a session |
| Ear return | Native Teams listen / speak-in-translated-language path | Ear return on by default at about a 15% mix (adjustable); see FAQ |
Language footnote (checked 2026-10-15): Microsoft Support lists Taiwanese among Interpreter languages; the Learn “Manage Interpreter agent” admin page lists nine languages and does not include Taiwanese on that date. This page treats Support as the user-facing language list and notes the Learn gap. Re-check both pages before you plan.

When Teams Interpreter is the better fit
- Your organisation already bought Copilot (or Rooms Pro where documented). If the people who need translation already have the licences and policies enable Interpreter, staying inside Teams avoids a separate desktop audio path.
- Meetings stay on Microsoft Teams. Listen-language and speak-translated controls live in Teams during the call.
- Official languages cover your meetings. When Support’s list (including Simplified Chinese / Mandarin) matches your pairs and you do not need apps outside Teams, native is often the simplest for a Teams-standardised org.
- You fit the included ~20-hour month and supported meeting types. For scheduled Teams meetings within documented surfaces (not ad-hoc / town hall / webinar / Teams Free per the help pages), native packaging can be enough without a second app.
When a Teams Interpreter alternative like Parley fits
- The other party cannot get Copilot (or is a guest / anonymous joiner). Interpreter is not available to guests; Parley runs on your computer and counterparts keep using Teams without a Copilot seat.
- You also meet outside Teams. The same desktop workflow works with Zoom, Meet and other mainstream meeting software — you are not tied to one platform’s licence gate.
- You want prepaid, per-minute billing you control. One connected session covers both directions; a $1 first top-up trial is available. Silence while connected is billed, so stop the session when you are done.
- You need self-serve without waiting on tenant licensing. Download, top up, and start — no Microsoft 365 Copilot procurement on every participant.

How Parley billing works
Managed translation needs wallet credit and no Microsoft Copilot gate. One connected session covers both directions — speaking and listening share a single charge — and billing includes silence while the session is connected, so stop the session when you are done. Qwen is $0.070/minute and Doubao is $0.148/minute; a $1 first top-up trial is available. Only Qwen and Doubao are live today; OpenAI and Gemini are Coming soon. Ear return (hearing your own translated voice) is on by default at about a 15% mix and can be turned down or off. An optional personal API licence is $95 one-time if you prefer your own keys. Venue interpretation needs a separate venue licence. Windows installers are currently unsigned, so Windows may warn about an unknown publisher. See pricing and FAQ for current details.
Setup
This page does not include Teams click-by-click setup. For Teams Interpreter, follow Microsoft’s own Learn and Support articles linked above. For Parley, the app appears as a microphone and speaker path for mainstream meeting software on Windows and Mac — exact menus differ by OS and client version, so follow the download and audio checklist and test both directions before a real call. More on the workflow: meeting translation.
Questions
Does Microsoft Teams Interpreter need a Copilot licence?
Microsoft’s Learn and Support pages (checked 2026-10-15) require a qualifying Microsoft 365 base licence plus a Teams licence plus a Microsoft Copilot licence. For meeting-room devices, Teams Rooms Pro can substitute for Copilot where documented. About 20 hours of interpretation per user per month are included; usage beyond that is subject to available capacity. Confirm current licensing on Microsoft’s pages before you buy. This page does not quote unverified Copilot dollar list prices.
Does Teams Interpreter support Chinese?
Yes. Microsoft Support (checked 2026-10-15) lists Simplified Chinese (Mandarin) among Interpreter languages, together with English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, German, French, Korean, and Taiwanese. The Learn admin page lists nine languages including Chinese (Mandarin) but does not list Taiwanese on that same check date — this page footnotes both sources. Parley’s managed Qwen and Doubao models also support Chinese-related sessions.
Is Parley a Microsoft Teams Interpreter alternative?
Yes in the sense that Parley is a personal desktop app you can use while you are in Microsoft Teams (and Zoom, Meet and other mainstream meeting apps). Teams Interpreter is a native in-meeting speech-to-speech feature tied to Microsoft 365, Teams and Copilot (or Rooms Pro where documented), with about 20 hours per month and platform limits such as no ad-hoc meetings or guest use. Parley is self-serve, prepaid per session-minute; counterparts install nothing and need no Copilot seat. If your organisation already has Copilot, you mainly meet in Teams, and the official language list covers you, native Teams is often simpler. If you need per-minute self-serve, cross-platform meetings, or zero install and zero enterprise licence for the other party, a desktop option like Parley can fit.
Do the other people need Copilot or to install software?
With Parley, no. You run the desktop app; others stay in Teams or another mainstream meeting app and hear your translated voice as ordinary meeting audio. They do not need a Parley account or a Copilot licence. Teams Interpreter stays inside Teams: anonymous and guest participants cannot use it, and cross-organisation use needs a verified Microsoft 365 account with a valid Copilot licence on the other side (per Support/Learn, checked 2026-10-15).
Can Teams Interpreter run outside Microsoft Teams?
No. Interpreter is a Teams meetings and Teams-to-Teams VoIP feature. It does not translate Zoom, Google Meet or other apps. Parley is a desktop workflow you can use across Teams, Zoom, Meet and other mainstream meeting software from one setup.
